Background
The Golden Triangle Legacy
The Golden Triangle Tour of India consists of three major stops – Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. For most tourists, India’s Golden Triangle tour ends in Jaipur, before they go to Delhi for their flight back home. The city is the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan and serves as a gateway to other famous destinations like Jodhpur, Udaipur, and Jaisalmer.
However, this is just a part of the reason why Jaipur is the crown of the Golden Triangle tour of India.
Antiquity
The rich background behind the ‘Pink City’
The city owes its existence to the meticulous efforts of the Maharaja Jai Singh II. In the early 18th century, he referred to several books, architectural experts, and the ancient Indian science of ‘Vastushastra’ to construct Jaipur. It is one of the earliest planned cities of the Indian subcontinent. The city earned its epithet of the ‘Pink City’ after it was coloured pink to welcome the Prince of Wales in the 19th century.
Highlights
While most Jaipur tour packages consist of sightseeing of famous monuments, there are a plethora of other exciting things you could do here.
i) Places to see
The city boasts of several architectural marvels. The Amer Fort is so hauntingly gorgeous that even the invaders did not destroy it. Ride an elephant to the top of the fort through the cobbled stone path and feel like royalty.
Check out the partially submerged Jal Mahal, an architectural marvel accessible through a boat-ride. Learn some ancient astronomy from a tour guide at the Jantar Mantar, the 18th-century observatory that tells precise time based on the sun’s position and the shadows it casts on massive instruments!
The city also has a modern addition to its collection of landmarks – the Birla Temple. It sends the message of spiritual unity through its depiction of global religious figures, carved on its white-marble exterior.
Take a heritage walk through the city to discover Hawa Mahal and City Palace, considered to be two of the most stunning feats of Rajputana architecture.
ii) Things to do
Rent a bicycle for a day and cycle through the Nahargarh fort to have one of the most profound outdoor experiences ever. It offers amazing views of the Man Sagar lake, the city, and of course, adds to your fitness. If you like wildlife adventures, take the safari at Jhalana or Nahargarh Biological Park to spot leopards, cheetahs, and elephants.
Although zip-lining or an ATV ride is also up for grabs at of the adventure parks, a hot air balloon ride above the city is something that you would never forget. It offers some of the most spectacular views of the city and its forts.
iii) Try
The local cuisine – an amalgamation of flavours as unique as the history of the city. You could also take cooking lessons at a local house to understand the intricacies of Rajasthani cooking. Hone your bargaining skills at one of the local markets selling gemstones, jewellery, carpets, and souvenirs. Elephant Polo, a game of the Rajputana royals can be enjoyed in a stunning backdrop at Dera Amer.
At one of the garden restaurants in the city, you could also enjoy the perfect combination of dance, dinner, and music. Check-in to an elephant farm operated by local families to bond with the animals over bathing and riding sessions.
With an abundance of stunning monuments, museums, markets, and restaurants, it is indeed a perfect blend of the old and the new. Whether you are a lover of art and history, a connoisseur of fine taste or a shopaholic, it has plenty to offer.
